We currently find ourselves at a critical juncture concerning science and research in Argentina. The CONICET (National Scientific and Technical Research Council) and the prospective trajectory of the country's scientific community face imminent threats due to the austerity measures enforced by the government led by Javier Milei. From the Science Secretariat of the PCE, we endeavour to articulate our concerns and register our deep apprehension regarding the measures being implemented and the potentially devastating repercussions they may inflict on research, innovation, and overall progress in Argentina.
In a period marked by considerable global challenges, science emerges as one of society's most invaluable instruments for generating solutions and advancements. To underscore the gravity of the situation, we wish to accentuate CONICET's achievements during the pandemic. Notably, it showcased its capability to expeditiously develop a diagnostic kit, contributing not only to overcoming the health crisis but also generating revenue for Argentina. This underscores that scientific research is not only indispensable for knowledge but also plays a pivotal role in the country's economic landscape. Furthermore, CONICET holds a position as an institution of reference in the region.
Nonetheless, we are confronted with a disheartening scenario. The decision to freeze salaries, suspend admissions, and curtail budgets poses a direct threat to the continuity and quality of research in Argentina. Researchers, fellows, and technical professionals—foundational pillars of the scientific community—are adversely affected by measures that cast uncertainty on their future and the future of research in the country.
It is imperative to underscore that science should not be perceived as an expense but rather as an investment in the country's future and knowledge. The suspension of admissions, promotions, and the reduction of operating budgets not only affect researchers and fellows but also impact the infrastructure and essential supplies required for conducting high-quality research, thereby having a direct consequence on the health and development of the country.
In solidarity with the Argentine scientific community, we earnestly demand a thorough review and rectification of these measures, ensuring the sustained continuity of research and the significant contribution of science to progress and the well-being of society. The preservation of science is paramount and should not be sacrificed on the altar of austerity, as it stands as the key to the future of Argentina.
